You are not the only individual looking for graduate interior design jobs. Therefore you will need to stand out from the crowd.

Graduate employers often complain about the poor attitude of graduates. Remember, you are going there to learn and gain experience, but also to impress. You are also there to gain relevant experience that will show future employers that you can use your skills and knowledge in a professional environment. The experience will help demonstrate that you are proactive, motivated and committed to your career. That is what employers are looking for. Contact the companies that you are interested in working for such as interior design and architectural firms, shopfitting and contracting companies, design consultancies, visual merchandising departments and even theaters to ask whether you could undertake a placement with them. Graduate interior design jobs are often available at entry level. You may be required to carry out some more menial office duties during your work experience -show willing! The same company will give you an insight into the context in which the they operate and enable you to make contacts. By showing your commitment and enthusiasm you may be able to take part in live briefs, attend exhibitions and even enter competitions. These are valuable learning experiences but should also be opportunities through your university, so find out what is available.

Further study-

Masters degrees are available in interior design and architectural visualisation. You may consider Masters courses in a related discipline to build skills which are relevant to another design field such as product design, graphic design or surface design. Another option is to train professionally outside the design industry, for example in teaching or art therapy. Experience gained elsewhere in industry may still benefit you if you choose to return to interior design. Short business and start up courses are run by universities, local arts centres or charities are useful for those interested in self-employment or developing their own businesses.
